A beautiful Ballade, conducted by Music Director Finalist, Jacob Joyce, sets the opening notes of the evening with passion that evokes a tale of romance and heroics that will keep you glued to your seat. The evening continues with extraordinary soloist Fabiola Kim who mesmerizes with Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto and its youthfulness balanced with depth of expression. JACOB JOYCE | MUSIC DIRECTOR CANDIDATE

Currently serving as the Associate Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, Jacob Joyce, age 32, is quickly gaining recognition as a dynamic and innovative presence on the podium. He recently concluded his tenure as the Resident Conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and has appeared across the country with orchestras including Detroit, St. Louis, Houston, Nashville, Kansas City, Colorado, and Florida symphonies. Abroad, Mr. Joyce has conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the NDR-Sinfonieorchester, the hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, and the Frankfurt Museumsorchester. For his work in Indianapolis and around the world, he was awarded a Solti Career Assistance Award in 2020.

Mr. Joyce previously served as the Conducting Fellow for the Fort Worth Symphony, with whom he collaborates frequently, and has also held positions as the Associate Conductor of the Yale Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Berkeley College Orchestra, Music Director of the Opera Theater of Yale College, and Cover Conductor of the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston. An avid promoter of contemporary music, he has conducted several premieres of orchestral and operatic works. Mr. Joyce is also an advocate for bringing classical music to new audiences. He is the host and creator of the podcast Attention to Detail: The Classical Music Listening Guide, which provides people of all backgrounds with techniques for listening to classical music. He is also the host of the PSO’s Disruptseries, which aims to present classical programs in a more social and familiar format. Mr. Joyce studied Orchestral Conducting with Hugh Wolff at the New England Conservatory.

He has also received instruction at the Tanglewood Music Center and the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen. In recognition of his work, Joyce was awarded the Robert Spano Conducting Prize at Aspen, and was a semifinalist in the LSO Donatella Flick Conducting Competition and the Solti International Conducting Competition. Mr. Joyce graduated from Yale College in 2014, with a B.A. in Music and Economics. He also received a M.M. in Violin Performance from the Yale School of Music in 2015, studying with Syoko Aki.

As a violinist, Mr. Joyce has performed with several orchestras nationwide, and was awarded the Broadus Erle Prize for an Outstanding Violinist at the Yale School of Music. He served as the concertmaster of the Yale Symphony Orchestra, and performed regularly with the Boston Philharmonic and the Atlantic Symphony. He has previously attended the Tanglewood Music Center, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, and Encore School for Strings.

FABIOLA KIM | VIOLIN

Hailed by the New York Times as “a brilliant soloist,” who “played with extraordinary precision and luminosity,” violinist Fabiola Kim enjoys a dynamic and versatile career as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and pedagogue. Her recent album, “1939,” with the Munich Symphony and Kevin John Edusei, has received international acclaim from BBC magazine, The Strad Magazine, Gramophone, American Record Guide and many others. Ms. Kim made her concerto debut with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of seven, just three years after beginning to play the violin. Ms. Kim is the winner of various awards and competitions, including being the youngest in history to win the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra’s Concerto Competition. Other competition wins include the Aspen Music Festival Violin Concerto Competition, The Juilliard Concerto Competition, Livingston Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Concerto Competition, the Kumho Prodigy Music Award, an award given to the most promising young musicians in Korea, and also was a prize winner at Corpus Christi International Competition and the Irving M. Klein International Competition for Strings.

She has collaborated with conductors such as Alan Gilbert, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Gilbert Varga, Jane Glover, and Nicholas McGegan. Her past solo performances include engagements with the Seoul Philharmonic, Suwon Philharmonic, Korean Chamber Orchestra, Kangnam Symphony, Korean Symphony, Orquestra Sinfonica OSUANL, Budapest Symphony Orchestra MAV, North Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Hofer Sinfoniker, Berlin Symphoniker, Westdeutche Sinfionia, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Colburn Orchestra, Juilliard Orchestra, Aspen Philharmonia and American Academy of Conducting at Aspen.

An avid Chamber Musician, Ms. Kim has collaborated with many renowned artists such as Lynn Harrell, Cho-Liang Lin, Paul Neubauer, Frans Helmerson, Marc Coppey, and Ida Kavafian, and she has performed at summer festivals including The Aspen Music Festival, Ravinia Steans Institute, Verbier Festival and La Jolla Music Society Summerfest.

Ms. Kim was recently appointed Assistant Professor of violin at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance and continues to serve as faculty at the Colburn School. Additionally, she is a Co-founder and Co-Artistic Director of Sounding Point Academy alongside Robert Lipsett. Other summer positions include violin faculty at Center Stage for Strings and Innsbrook Institute. Previously, she was a teaching assistant to Robert Lipsett at the Colburn School.

Ms. Kim received her Artist Diploma at the Colburn School under the guidance of Robert Lipsett, and she received her Bachelor and Master of Music at the Juilliard School under the tutelage of Sylvia Rosenberg and Ronald Copes.
