DAOU VINEYARDS & WINERY

Family owned and operated, DAOU Family Estates is committed to producing collectible, world-class wines to rival the most respected appellations in the world. Situated on a 212-acre hilltop estate in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles, our remarkable geology, favorable microclimate, and high elevation were once described by renowned California winemaker André Tchelistcheff as “a jewel of ecological elements.” As stewards of this beautiful terroir, DAOU’s goal is to make unique fine wines that honestly and accurately reflect the potential of the estate and to craft Bordeaux style wines that combine Old World tradition with New World techniques.

THE WINE | $23.95

This pure, elegant wine shows what is possible from Chardonnay grown at select coastal sites in Paso Robles. It offers inviting aromas of Bosc pear, pineapple and guava graced with hints of hibiscus flower, white peach and allspice. Notes of honeysuckle and vanilla complement fragrances of tropical fruit and warm toast. The palate is lush and silky, with mouthfilling flavors of sweet honeydew melon, mango, pineapple and vanilla crème brûlée. Complementary flavors of citrus and nectarine are accented by suggestions of hazelnut and toasted almonds throughout an amazingly long, supple finish.

THE VINTAGE

The year 2019 produced possibly the greatest vintage DAOU Mountain has ever experienced. Heavy rains during dormancy, combined with moderate temperatures and extended hang time, yielded the latest harvest to date. The ample winter rainfall—close to 40 inches total—gave way to a healthy cover crop that replenished the soil’s micronutrient levels. The climate throughout the growing season was perfect, with temperatures mostly in the 80s and 90s, and not a single day reaching 100 degrees during the entire year. The harvested grapes arrived in exquisite condition, showing no damage, sunburn or shriveling. The resulting wines are marked by elegance and power, with moderate alcohols and great acidity that promise excellent longevity.

THE WINE | $20.95

Our 2019 DAOU Discovery Collection Rosé is inspired by the iconic dry rosés of southern France. True to form, this wine is delightfully fragrant and floral, showing lovely aromas of fresh strawberry, sliced peach, and watermelon with nuances of hibiscus, cherry, and clover honey. The palate is refreshingly crisp yet lusciously smooth, revealing juicy flavors of nectarine, orange, strawberry parfait, and golden delicious apple. These primary flavors are underlain by plush, pleasing notes of papaya and honeydew melon, accented with a suggestion of rosehip tea. A long, clean finish lingers with impressions of peach, citrus zest, and Barbados cherry.

The 2018 DAOU Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a shining example of world-class
Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles. This wine’s magnificent nose is quintessential Cabernet Sauvignon, offering scents of dark chocolate, licorice, blackberries, and cured meats with a touch of cedar. The palate delivers an explosion of fresh, dark berry fruits. Flavors of blackberry, juicy black cherry, cassis, and cocoa are underscored by lovely accents of blueberry and raspberry. A silky palate is nicely integrated with hints of toasty oak, graphite, mineral, and forest floor. Ripe fruits and exotic spices linger on a generous, full-bodied finish that promises excellent age-worthiness.

THE VINTAGE

2018 may go in history as the longest season yet. A good amount of rain fell in the region which gave way to a later bud break in April. The vines were energized by the much needed moisture, setting one of our best crops yet. The weather remained steady from spring through June. Then we received a long heatwave that fortunately did not affect the quality of the grapes due to the fact that it was before the start of veraison. A cooling trend ensued for the rest of the season right after the heatwave, prolonging the hang time leading into harvest. The long hang time yielded deep color and concentration with dense wines. The tannins are silky and beautifully integrated. As a result, 2018 was an exceptional vintage that really highlights the aromatics and acidity of the wines.
