Billings Symphony’s Music Director, Anne Harrigan, will Retire at the End of the 75th Season

Billings, MT — In a heartfelt message to the community, Vincent W. & Janet M. Carpenter Music Director of the Billings Symphony, Anne Harrigan, has announced her decision to retire at the end of the upcoming 75th anniversary season (2025/26 season), marking her 20th year with the organization.

Reflecting on her journey, Harrigan shared, “When my daughter, Erin, was born, I planned to simplify my schedule. However, my passion for the Billings Symphony and the beauty of Montana changed that course. Each year here has been more rewarding than the last, and I have been grateful for the unwavering support of my family and the community.”

Having joined the Billings Symphony as a guest conductor, Harrigan quickly fell in love with the spirit and energy of the orchestra. “The organization is stronger than ever, and I am excited for what the future holds,” she said. “While it may seem crazy to give a two years’ notice, the Board of Directors needs that time to mount a robust search for my successor, ensuring a smooth transition.”

Harrigan highlighted the orchestra’s continued success, emphasizing the inspiring leadership of Dr. Steven Hart with the Chorale, the flourishing Youth Orchestra, and the outstanding administrative team led by John W. & Carol L.H. Green Executive Director, Mario Lopez.

“I consider you my musical family,” Harrigan expressed. “Thank you for your dedication and joy as we continue to create transcendent musical experiences together. I look forward to every moment of these next two years.”

The Billings Symphony has begun its 74th season and is gearing up for a memorable 75th anniversary season filled with extraordinary performances and celebrations, underscoring the legacy Harrigan built over two decades.

The Billings Symphony will be hard at work behind the scenes for the next two seasons, preparing a Music Director search year for the 2026/27 season, the Billings Symphony’s 76th season.
