Preludio Strings
Members of this ensemble generally possess around one year of playing experience and have limited proficiency in note reading. The program introduces them to the foundational aspects of orchestral performance, including proper posture, following the conductor’s baton, and engaging with fundamental ensemble repertoire. Emphasis is placed on developing music reading skills to pave the way for future success in orchestral settings. We strongly recommend private lessons to further enhance their skills and are pleased to offer referrals to esteemed musicians within the Billings Symphony who can provide valuable guidance.
Concert Orchestra
Members possess around two years of playing experience and have developed strong note-reading skills, good tone, and accurate intonation. The selected repertoire remains primarily in the first position, yet advanced beginners will be challenged with parts that require playing in higher positions.
Young Artists
Members of this ensemble boast two or more years of experience, having honed their advanced note-reading skills and playing with exceptional tone and intonation. The repertoire chosen for this group includes pieces that utilize first, second, and third positions. Students will be developing and applying vibrato techniques, while mastering more advanced key signatures and rhythms.
Repertory Orchestra
Members perform standard orchestral repertoire, demonstrating mature technical and musical proficiency. The audition requirements align with those of the Montana All-State Orchestra. Mentor musicians from the Billings Symphony will regularly provide professional-level insights. In our season finale concert, members will have the opportunity to perform side-by-side with the Billings Symphony.
Repertory Winds
Woodwind members perform standard orchestral repertoire, demonstrating mature technical and musical proficiency. The audition requirements align with those of the Montana All-State Orchestra, ensuring a high level of skill and dedication. Mentor musicians from the Billings Symphony will regularly provide professional-level insights, offering guidance and expertise. In our season finale concert, woodwind members will have the unique opportunity to perform side-by-side with the Billings Symphony, and to play in smaller chamber ensembles of their peers.
Percussion Ensemble
Members of this percussion ensemble have intermediate experience, and are honing their advanced note-reading skills, tone, and precision. The repertoire selected for this group includes pieces that showcase a range of techniques and dynamics. Students will develop and apply complex sticking patterns, while mastering more advanced rhythms and time signatures. Additionally, they will explore various mallet and hand percussion techniques, expanding their technical proficiency and musical expression.
